What Color Should My Vitamin C Serum Be?

Have you ever noticed serums containing Vitamin C can vary in color, texture and odor? Do you ever wonder how to tell if the serum you purchased is fresh and at its full potency?

Occasionally our customer service team receives questions about the color or smell of Vitamin C serums like SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic, Phloretin CF, or Obagi’s Vitamin C topicals.  “I’ve purchased this many times from XYZ Company and it’s always orange and smells much stronger than what I received from SkinMedix – is something wrong?”

The answer is absolutely not! The Vitamin C serum you purchase from SkinMedix is fresh and new.

Vitamin C is a very pale yellow color in its liquid state and nearly odorless at the time it is manufactured.  As time goes by, exposure to heat, light and air causes oxidation. It is only after going through the oxidative process that the serum changes its tint to a darker yellow then eventually orange. The serum will also become thicker and acquire a more pronounced odor.

The reason our product is so fresh is because all Vitamin C serums at SkinMedix sell very quickly to our thousands of repeat customers around the world – and for a good reason! Some of the benefits of Vitamin C are:

  • Topical Vitamin C may reverse the negative effects of UV radiation in skin
  • Inhibits the production of melanin, preventing the dark spots from forming on your skin
  • Mops us free radicals that trigger wrinkling and sagging
  • Helps smooth and firm skin and fade any existing brown spots.

To prevent your CE Ferulic, Phloretin CF  and other vitamin C topical serums from changing colors, make sure the lid is tightly closed and store it in a cool, dark place to minimize the oxidation process.
